Free trips for frequent ‘green’ ferry travellers

A program to help Sea SA car & passenger ferries reach its target of reducing green house gas emissions from cars by 25,000 tonnes per year is set to benefit travellers who use the ferry on a regular basis.

Under the new Climate Clever Rewards Club, members make just 5 one way full-fare ferry trips with 12 months, and the next trip of equivalent value is free.  Previously, Climate Clever members needed to make 10 trips to earn their complimentary trip, but Sea SA has made the rewards easier to attain in an effort to reach its target for reduced carbon emissions.

“We have been given Australian Marine Environment Protection Association recognition for our potential to reduce carbon emissions by up to 25,000 tonnes annually by taking cars off the road,” Sea SA Managing Director, Stephanie Dawson explained.  “If we can encourage enough drivers to choose the ‘greener’ option of travelling across the Spencer Gulf by ferry, instead of making the 350 kilometre round road trip, we will eventually reach that goal.”

“This is more than just a loyalty program to reward our valued repeat customers, it reflects our strong personal commitment to the environment and aims to encourage more drivers to think about how their fuel consumption is affecting our planet,” Stephanie said.

Sea SA trialled the use of 2 ferries in the cross-Gulf service between March and June this year, which combined, produce just 733 tonnes of CO2 annually.  By contrast, to drive around the Gulf, the same volume of vehicles would produce 25,110 tonnes of CO2 – or 34 times as much.

As climate change remains of vital national and international concern, Stephanie believed more and more people would be looking towards micro-solutions.

“The Climate Clever Rewards Club empowers people to make a conscious choice about the impact of their car travel.  It will not only benefit the environment, it will be a real boost to the hip pockets of people on both sides of the Gulf, who frequently commute between the Eyre and Yorke Peninsulas for holidays, to visit friends and relatives, conduct business, or for other personal reasons,” she said.

The Climate Clever Rewards Club is easy to join and it’s free.  Terms and conditions apply.  Simply ask for a Climate Clever Rewards card at Sea SA’s Wallaroo office and make sure you receive a stamp at the office every time you cross the Gulf, or visit www.seasa.com.au for further information.
